"Hey, I Made That!"

Join the HomeMade Challenge with

Hummingbird Lane Fabrics

Tula Pink's collection, HomeMade, pays homage to the creators and sewers and all the creativity they bring to the world. This challenge encourages quilters to pay tribute to what drives the quilter/sewist/maker to create with their hands. A jury, including Tula Pink, will select 12 quilts that speak to the glory, attitude and beauty that comes from the privilege of saying “Hey, I made that.”

Entering the challenge can be done through a participating quilt shop, like Hummingbird Lane Fabrics, or participants can enter the virtual challenge without going through a local quilt shop. The virtual portal will be announces at a later date. To be eligible for the Hummingbird Lane Fabrics Exclusive prizes you must enter the contest through Hummingbird Lane Fabrics.

Quilters can submit up to two pieces to a participating quilt shop.  The quilt shop will then select one entrant/quilter to submit to the jury.

The Challenge

Competition theme: HomeMade

HomeMade - adjective (hōm′mād′): made or prepared at home, locally or by the maker's own efforts.

The focus of the HomeMade juried exhibit is to create an item that celebrates our community of makers and all the glory, attitude and beauty that comes from the privilege of saying “Hey, I made that.” Each quilt will pay tribute to what drives us to create with our hands. It’s about creativity, intention, approach, quality and the pure sense of joy achieved by playing with fabric, threads and finely-crafted tools.

The entries can be art quilts or traditional quilts that speak to the theme. Any techniques—piecing, appliqué, embroidery and/or manipulated fabric, etc. may be used.

General entry specifics:

Each entrant may submit up to two works to Hummingbird Lane. Approximately 80% of each work (60”x 60” quilt) must feature FreeSpirit HomeMade fabric by Tula Pink. We ask that each entrant's finished work include some application of Aurifil Thread too. When you submit your quilt, please be specific about the thread color and weights used.  One quilt from the Hummingbird Lane challenge will be submitted to FreeSpirit.

Size of entries:

Each work should be no smaller than 60 inches (152.4cm) square, or 60" x 60" (if a quilt is close to these dimensions but does not quite meet the requirements, the entrant may still enter their work). Each entry must have a 4” (10cm) finished sleeve or casing sewn to the top back edge of the quilt. Sleeves should be secured with stitching at the top and bottom edge of the sleeve. A cloth label with the entrant’s name, address, email address and telephone number must be securely sewn to the back of the quilt.

Jury:

Quilts submitted to Hummingbird Lane will be showcased via social media, and possible at live events depending on where we are with COVID at the time.  Quilts will be displayed on Social Media and this website for voting.  The top 3 quilts will be picked by October 1, 2020 and will be showcased for further voting on Social Media and this website. Voting will close on October 31, 2020. The quilt that earns first place from Hummingbird Lane will then be entered into the Free Spirit Fabrics challenge.

The organizers reserve the right to refuse any work that does not match the slides submitted to the jury.
